A very surprising sight yesterday was that of a female common merganser
at the westernmost of the Twin Lakes near Sunset Beach, NC. The reddish
brown of this bird's head and neck ended in a very sharp horizontal line
across the neck. The throat was pure white. The bird was twice the size of
the ruddy ducks swimming nearby.
