Hi folks,
Last evening I saw what appeared to be an adult male Black-chinned
Hummingbird at my feeder. It was almost dark however, and the gorget
color was not clearly visible. This morning he came back and showed me
his gorget in the morning sun. It was a brilliant blue (maybe the angle
made it look blue instead of purple)! Otherwise the bird is similar to a
Ruby-throat except it has very dusky sides, a very black throat and pumps
its' tail furiously in flight.
Here are directions if anyone would like to see this bird:
Turn right off highway 64 (old 64 through town - I don't know if they are
going to rename it 64 business or what) onto Airport Road (same road that
leads to the NC Aquarium). Eventually Airport Road will curve to the
left; at this point stay straight on Victor Meekins Road. Victor Meekins
will quickly make a sharp curve to the right; just after this curve will
be a dirt road on the right called Sunnyside Ln. Take a right at this
point and follow Sunnyside as it curves to the left. My house is the
second one on the right. You will notice all the feeders, bird houses,
etc. There are five hummingbird feeders visible from the driveway. I
have seen the bird at two of them so far so watch them all. I am not
likely to be home but if I am I will be glad for you to come inside to
watch. My phone number is (252) 473-1086.
Elayne Kodroff reports that her Allen's is still coming to her feeder in
Manteo.
