Hello, this is a December 7 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
GREEN- BREASTED MANGO (NOT)
CINNAMON TEAL
FULVOUS WHISTLING- DUCKS
EURASIAN WIGEON
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS
The GREEN-BREASTED MANGO present in Concord, NC for over 2 weeks failed to
appear at the feeders today Dec. 7 despite a constant vigil by several
birders from 10:00 AM until 5:15 PM. This is the first day that this reliable
bird has not appeared since 11-19.
A male CINNAMON TEAL is being seen at the Goldsboro, NC wastewater treatment
facility . For directions and updates, call Eric Dean at 919-736-7264 .
At this same facility, a FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCK has been seen frequently.
This bird is in a different lagoon from the teal. Again for updates and
directions, call Eric Dean at 919-736-7264 .
Up to 7 FULVOUS WHISTLING -DUCKS have been seen at Magnolia Gardens near
Charleston, SC. Look in Indian Mound Pond for the ducks.
A male EURASIAN WIGEON is being seen with a small group of Am. Wigeon at
Greenfield Lake in Wilmington, NC. This bird has been seen since 11-25.
Female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS are coming to feeders in Fort Mill, SC and
Pendleton, SC. Contact Bill Hilton at <hilton@hiltonpond.org> for details.
A good place to observe raptors in eastern NC is the Alligator River NWR off
US 64. The area offers large open areas and extensive views of fields and
sky. On 12-5, 5 species were seen in just over 2 hours, including bald eagle
and peregrine falcon.
The Clemson SC Christmas Bird Count will be held Saturday Dec. 16. Contact
