That good field in Georgetown County

Hi Carolinabirders,
Some bad news and then worse news about Lex Glover's post yesterday about
the field with the Yellow Rails.
Yesterday, five of us. Gary Phillips, Chris Hill, Tonya Spires, David
Donmoyer and myself birded the field where Lex Glover had the Yellow Rails.
No Yellow Rails or firm Le Conte's Sparrows and Grasshopper Sparrows were
found. Although two or three likely LeConte's suspects were flushed and
seen in flight but could not be made to perch for a good look. However,
good numbers of White-crowned and Vesper Sparrows were found. As Gary and
Chris were about to leave they found a LINCOLN'S SPARROW. So in the last
week this field has held 12 species of sparrows.
Now for the worse news. This field IS NOT PART OF SAMWORTH. IT IS
PRIVATE PROPERTY. This was only found out about three days ago. A
misleading feature is that the SCDNR sign is at the corner of the property
on the paved Plantersville Loop Road. However that small wood sign is an
arrow pointing to Samworth. The property is not posted and the landowner
(a large timber company) APPARENTLY has a benign attitude about folks
(especially locals)who use the property for hunting and nature study or
they may just not be aware of it. Nonetheless entering the field means you
are trespassing.
Certainly birding from the edge of the road would be fine and given
patience and good luck you could get any of the sparrows. All the good
sparrows yesterday could have been seen from the road. In fact one Vesper
landed on the road and Chris, David and I had studied looks at it.
I will be contacting the landowner for permission to census the birds
there for the Litchfield-Pawleys Island CBC next year and will inquire as
to allowing birders to enter the field.
Please be aware that the nearby posted properties are leased to hunt clubs.
