Hi Carolinabirders,
Gary Phillips and I went to the sparrow clearcut near Samworth WMA
Plantersville, Georgetown County, SC yesterday-Jan. 10.
The number of sparrows has dramaticaly decreased with perhaps about 500 in
the two fields as compared to the thousands previously there. Rather
disappointing except for the one bird in caps.
Red-tailed Hawk-1
E. Bluebird-3
N. Mockingbird-1
Field Sparrow-6 in a corner of the northern field
Savannah Sparrow-numerous
LE CONTE'S SPARROW-small sparrow flew up to a tree about 30 feet over
Gary's head, posed for about a minute. I had a good front view from about
60 yards away "yellow breast/belly no streaking except for a narrow band of
streaks just below head. I could not see the throat/chin area because
breast appeared puffed up. When it flew, it was a short tailed sparrow with
a light back". I did not see the bird in profile so I can't describe the
side of the face or cap. Not the best view but I can't imagine anything
else it could be. I don't believe this non-marsh habitat would be
appropriate for a Sharp-tailed Sparrow in winter.
Song Sparrow-10
Swammp Sparrow-30
White-throated Sparrow-10
White-crowned Sparrow-2
Red-winged Blackbird-3 females
Good birding, good company
