Hello, this is a Jan. 11 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
WHITE-FACED IBIS
NORTHERN GOSHAWK
BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD
CINNAMON TEAL
COMMON MERGANSERS
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD
GREATER WHITE -FRONTED GOOSE
THAYERS GULL
A WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen at Savannah NWR on Jan. 10. The ibis was feeding
in marshes along the road near the first hard turn after getting on the
entrance road to the refuge.
An adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen in Manteo, NC at Elizabethan Gardens/ Fort
Raleigh. Efforts to relocate this bird have so far been unsuccessful. Birders
in that area may want to look for a WARBLING VIREO that has been seen a few
times since mid- December., most recently Jan. 4. Look around the greenhouses
at the Elizabethan Gardens.
An imm. male BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD is still being seen at Sunset Beach,
NC. The home is on a lake where a male CINNAMON TEAL has been regularly seen.
Call Mary McDavit at 910- 579- 2446 for details.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen 12-29 at the Lake Mattamuskeet (NC)
entrance pond. This goose was associating with many Canada geese.
An adult THAYER'S GULL was at Cape Hatteras Point on 12-29.
A very cold December in the eastern US has resulted in reports of COMMON
MERGANSERS from scattered locales across North Carolina. On 12-31 a female
merganser was at Lake Julian in Buncombe County, NC for a rare report from
the mountains.
An imm. female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD has been easy to see in Raleigh, NC. Call
Joe Harris 919-845-0267 for updates and directions for this bird.
Birders interested in offshore birding opportunities can sign up for winter
trips out of Virginia and North Carolina ports. Trips dpart from Virginia
