Hello,
I'm going to be taking my little sister to visit Catawba College in
Salisbury, NC on Friday and Saturday. I'd like suggestions on good
places to bird (and maybe someone to bird with) while she's there. I
need to drop her off at noon on Friday and pick her up in mid-afternoon
on Saturday. Where should I go? Last year when I took her there for a
short visit I wandered around Catawba's property, which was
interesting, but not good for more than a few hours. I'd love to go see
the Black-chinned Hummingbird and Cinnamin Teal at Sunset Beach, but
that looks like it is too long a drive. Where can I go that is within
about 3 hours of Salisbury where I can do a little birding Friday
afternoon and then some more Saturday morning? I'd prefer a place where
I can see birds I don't usually get to see in Pennsylvania. The other
requirement is that there has to be an inexpensive motel within a
reasonable distance, since sleeping in the car is probably not the
greatest idea in the world. :) The only part of North Carolina I'm at
all familiar with is the region along the Blue Ridge Parkway and South
Carolina I'm not familiar with at all, so any suggestions would be
helpful. Are there any field trips anywhere reasonable that I could
join Saturday morning? Anybody who'd like to play local guide? Would
the Carolina Sandhills NWR be a worthwhile destination at this time of
year?
