Folks,
I was told yesterday it still is coming around in Hillsboro, NC, usually in
the morning and late afternoon. I went out today and spent from 12:15 till
2:30pm waiting for the bird with no luck. Still suspect it`s a partial
Albino Dark-eyed Junco.
I did have fun in my truck watching the birds all around me. I managed 19
species while parked next to a big holly bush full of berries. The better
birds were 2 Hermit Thrushes, Fox Sparrow, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Pine
Warbler and a calling House Wren. I thought I heard a calling Catbird, but
after being fooled last spring at RARO by a Hermit Thrush calling like a
Catbird I dismissed it. The Hermit Thrushs gave me a long show from 20
foot away for a long time til a robin chased it off. These guys were slowly
and carefully raiding the holly for berries. The holly tree was at my
backside so I couldn`t but just watch them approach the tree. Never
managed to get the one Mourning Dove and American Gold Finch to near the
feeders or the ground so I know my presence was slowing things down. I did
at least get several times Dark-eyed Juncos to visit the feeder briefly.
If anyone wants to try for this bird this weekend just write me and I`ll
give you the home owners phone number to let him know your coming out. I
think any more than one car with birders in it will just keep most of the
birds from visiting.
