Folks,
I birded Lake Julian in Buncombe County this afternoon and had a
raft of about 23 Scaup. I was reasonably sure I was seeing at least 5
Greater Scaup but I needed some help. While waiting for Bob Olthoff to
arrive, a few of the birds were preening and did stretch their wings,
clearly showing the white secondaries as well as the white extending into
the primaries. Bob arrived and concurred that there are probably at least 5
Greaters. Greater Scaup are never a dependable bird up here in the
mountains.
Also present at Lake Julian were 4 Ring-billed Gulls and 2
Brown-headed Nuthatches.
The Scaup can be viewed from the picnic area next to the boat docks.
Good birding!
