Palante, People’s Power, and Common Cause in the Black Panthers and the Young Lords OrganizationJanuary 27 – March 31, 2007, The Robert and Sallie Brown Gallery and Museum
The Stone Center presents Radicals in Black and Brown: Palante, People’s Power, and Common Cause in the Black Panthers and the Young Lords Organization, an exhibit of photographs, posters, and flyers chronicling the common and connected histories of the Black Panther Party and the Young Lords Organization. The exhibit examines the history, interactions, and corresponding activities within and between the two groups and also the ways that communities viewed and understood, or misunderstood, the images that were produced by or about the Panthers, and the Lords. The exhibit will be on display in the Stone Center’s Robert and Sallie Brown Gallery and Museum from January 27 through March 31. Works featured in the exhibit were acquired from the Alden and Mary Kimbrough Collection, the Carlos Flores Collection, the Charles Jones Collection, and the Hiram Maristany Collection. Exhibit Sponsors and DirectorsThe exhibit is co-sponsored by the Institute of African-American Research at UNC at Chapel Hill; The Latina/o Studies Minor at UNC at Chapel Hill; and African-American Latina/o Alliance of North Carolina. Co-directors of the exhibit include Joseph Jordan, Stone Center Director; Johanna Fernandez of Carnegie-Mellon University, and Charles Jones of Georgia State University. The project’s advisors are Darrel Enck-Wanzer, of Eastern Illinois University and Hiram Maristany, noted photographer and former Young Lord.
