Our Lord Vishnu has many names, as we all know.
In the Vishnu Sahasranamam, our lord is referred
by the weapons he possess. Of which, "Chakri" and
"Rathangapaanih" stands for Shri Sudharshana and
described as foremost.

Shri Sudharsana is referred in Divya Prabandham,
significantly.

 ...adaloLi thikazhtharu thikiriyan^ thadakkai

The Greatness of Shri Sudharsana is such, as enjoyed and
shared by our Alvars. Periyalvar too has mentioned the
greatness of Shri Sudharsana in many places. For instance:

 ...vadivaarsOthivalaththuRaiyum sudaraazhiyumpallaaNdu

                          -- ThiruppallaaNdu

Today [24th June 1999] is Periyalvar's Thiru Natshatram.
So, let us look into what Swami Desika has written, on Perialvar

"pEraNintha villiputthoo raani thanniR

Sri Vishnu Chitta was born in aani maatham,
suvaathi nakshatthiram in Sri Villiputtur.

As Shri Vishnu-Chitta started speaking in
Pandya king's court, the hall was filled with
the divine knowledge of vedas and the entire
assembly heard him in rapt attention.

Our Alvar established the Parathvam of Sriya:Pathi.
The Por Kizhi just came to Perialvar's hands, instantly.
The Pandya king, pleased with having known the truth,
arranged for a grand procession to celebrate the occasion.

Sriya:Pathi was immensely pleased with Perialvar, for
having established the truth. Our Lord wanted to
witness the grand ceremony given in honour of our
Alvar and came with his consort in Garuda Vahanam.

This occasion was marked by Periyalvar singing
 "pallaaNdu pallaaNdu pallaayiratthaaNdu."

You would have seen, in the last 2 lines of Swami's
verse on Perialvar, where, Swami even gives the count
of the pasurams rendered by Perialvar.
Periyalwar has given us 461 pasurams as Thirumozhi in
addition to 12 pasurams in ThiruppallaaNdu.

Shri Karunakaran swami, in his upanyasam, enjoyed,
Lord's Leela on Periyalvar as below:

Our Lord was deep in his thought. He was very happy
with the way things are going, but...

... he had one feel of longing for something. Our Lord
realised that he 'misses' the 'company' & 'guidance'
of 'Elders'. Our Lord feels that there should be an
elder to whom he can prostrate; from whom he can seek
blessings and advice.

Perialvar solved our Lord's longing by giving his
daughter - Godha piratti - in marriage to our Lord.
So, Shri Vishnu Chittar by virtue of being our Lord's
father-in-law, thereby solving Paramatma's 'kurai'[!?],
became 'Peria' [Big] 'Alvar'.

...To be continued!
