SrI:

Sri Manadayam Krishnaswamy Iyengar has sent the following information
regarding the practice of YeNNai sasthram. The invocation includes not
5 but 7 men who are all supposed to be chiranjeevis. Perhaps the
purpose of the slokas on pancha knayas and the 7 men ( Ashwathama,
Bali, Vyasa, Hanuman, Vibheeshana, Krupa and Parashurama is to onvoke
the blessings of them for long life.

(This is being sent to the groups for information to readers.)

>>> The Boy/Girl is blessed before every oil bath, by application of a
few drops of oil by the elderly lady in the family. The person sits on
a wooden plank (maNai) which is placed on a Rangoli; on special
occasions like Dipavali, lighted oil-wick-lamps are placed on both
sides. The person is applied Kumkum on the forehead, handed betel
leaf, nut, flower, and arathi is done. The elderly lady dips a flower
bud in the oil cup and applies drops of it on the inside of the left
arm, chanting names of great achievers and blessing the person with
long life. The procedure is known as YeNNai Sastram. The slokam which
is chanted is:

For men (seven names):

Ashwthamo Balir Vyaso Hanumanshcha VibhishaNah,
Krupah Parashuramashcha,Saptaite Chiranjivinaah.

For women (five names):

Ahalya Draupadi Sita Tara Mandodari tatha
Panchakanyaah smarennityam mahaapataka naashanam.
The lady then swipes the oil placed on the arm and applies it to the
head, cheeks, shoulders, waist, knees and feet, repeating it three
times. She then takes the vethilai paakku etc., and blesses the
youngster with long life and prosperity.<<<<<<<
