Dear Sriman Raghavan,
Reference to Buddhism and Charvaka philosophy is found in Ramayanam also. In
Aranyakandam when Bharata goes to the forest along with Sage Vasishta, the
Kula Guru and others to bring Lord Rama back to Ayodhya after Dasaradha?s
demise, Lord Rama refers to Buddhist thought and Charvaka Philosophy as an
answer to Sage Jabali's non Vedic interpretation of the nature of the souls
and the relationship between souls, to dissuade Lord Rama from carrying out
His Pitru Vakya Paripalana.
I have read some atheistc Marxist historians interpreting thereby that
Ramayana was a diabolical creation of the Brahmanas and was written after
Buddha's birth some 2500 years ago, with the sole purpose of the denigrating
the Buddhist thought and to bring back Vedic philosophy. Their dating of the
Vedas (originally of the Christian historians) is also a comical piece.
This shows at once the poverty of the Marxist philosophy as practiced now by
the so-called objective sceintific Marxist historians.
Suffice it to remember that this Gautama Buddha or Siddharta attained his
Nirvana after some five hundred and odd births as Bodhi Sattva according to
the Buddhist Jataka Kathas.
The Vardhamana Mahavira is one of the Thirthankaras (maybe 16th, which means
15 Thirthankaras preceded him. The numbers may not be correct). Arishta
Nemi, Lord Krishna's Chachera Bhai (one of the cousins) was one of the
earlier Thirthankaras.
This means that these Avaidic thoughts like the Buddhist, Charvaka, Jaina,
Kapila etc philosophies are very ancient and maybe as old as our Vedic
thought itself. The Lord might have created these as well, for a purpose.
It is said that when Dharma is trampled upon by its upholders themselves and
when the Vedic thought itself is used to propagate the opposite of what it
really means and when adharma and exploitation reach a zenith The Lord
Himself sends His people to preach atheism and Avaidic philosophies like
Buddhism, Charvakism or to encourage religious practices which create
"Jugupsa" or abhorration like Paasupatam etc to wean people away from
Adharma and bring them back to Dharmic way of life.
Adiyen,
Ramanuja Dasan.
