Old
Well
The Old Well is the primary visual symbol of UNC. A local lumberyard
originally constructed the well for $200 to serve as the sole
water supply for the University. In 1897, the Old Well was given
its present form at the suggestion of President Edwin A. Alderman,
who modeled it after the Temple of Love in the Garden of Versailles.
Brick walks, plants and benches were added in 1954 to beautify
the surrounding area.
