Re: Goodell's School Grammar of Attic
I've taken a rather cursory look over it. My first judgment is that it's a relatively good brief presentation of the elements of Attic grammar for use in grammar-translation pedagogy. I'm a bit puzzled why this 1902 publication was deemed particularly worth the effort to scan and digitize. Upon checking the presentation of middle verbs, I find the traditional conception of "deponent" verbs as "middle or passive in form with active meaning." It would seem to me that the Goodwin textbook of 1923 or the Goodwin & Gulick of 1930 would be more useful -- but those, of course, are available even today in print editions.Paul-Nitz wrote:What comments do you have about Goodell's School Grammar of Attic Greek?

Goodwin's Greek Grammar is on community pricing at Logos. You might want to place a bid on it, but you will need to create an account if you don't already have one. If the final price which covers production costs is lower than you have bid, you get the lower price.

Thanks for the heads up. Logos sends so many adds that I've started to ignore them and missed this. I put in a bid.George F Somsel wrote:Goodwin's Greek Grammar is on community pricing at Logos
The Middle is the first thing I looked at, too. I was interested in the division of middle into the categories Direct (on himself), Indirect (for himself), Subjective (from himself). I wonder if this categorization is unique to Goodell?cwconrad wrote:Upon checking the presentation of middle verbs
I do wish I had a simpler mental catalog of self-affected uses than the list below, but maybe it's just wishing that the complex be simple.
Collective motion: ἀγείρεσθαι, συνάγεσθαιi
