Dear friends,
I'm far from understanding everything in this book in Detail and I'm not through as well - but what I could read already is simply terrific and much the best on word order or pragmatic effects of Hyperbata I've read so far. It's made for classical Greek but you can Transfer the results on the text of the NT as well. The authors did a great Job - without much speculation, everything is being attested by clear examples (and translated as well). The title is: "Discontinuous Syntax: Hyperbaton in Greek"
If I have the time - I read it again....
Yours
Peter

Dear Mike,
that's what I call interesting - thanks for your review and the transfer to the NT - exactly that was my aim, after finishing the Hyperbaton-book, namely to look for NT examples and try to decode and classify them. I've gone through all your texts and exampels - a great job, thank you !
At least one who is interested in this important book !

Re: Discontinuous Syntax: Hyperbaton in Greek
I have read your posts @MAubrey several times and, frankly, I'm not 100% sure I understand even half of it. If focus is calling attention to or singling out, does hyperbaton focus on the inner noun within the nested ring of phrases? And are there other materials on hyperbaton that would be of use?

Hyperbaton focuses on the element it puts at the beginning of the clause.Thom Chittom wrote: ↑May 13th, 2022, 6:19 pm I have read your posts @MAubrey several times and, frankly, I'm not 100% sure I understand even half of it. How do you understand that for Matthew 1:22?Stephen Carlson wrote: ↑May 16th, 2022, 8:47 pmHyperbaton focuses on the element it puts at the beginning of the clause.Thom Chittom wrote: ↑May 13th, 2022, 6:19 pm I have read your posts @MAubrey several times and, frankly, I'm not 100% sure I understand even half of it. I distinguish between hyperbaton proper and the second-position placements of enclitics (here ἐστιν).Jonathan Robie wrote: ↑May 18th, 2022, 12:04 pmHow do you understand that for Matthew 1:22?Stephen Carlson wrote: ↑May 16th, 2022, 8:47 pmHyperbaton focuses on the element it puts at the beginning of the clause.Thom Chittom wrote: ↑May 13th, 2022, 6:19 pm I have read your posts @MAubrey several times and, frankly, I'm not 100% sure I understand even half of it. OK. Are there any other subclasses of hypberbaton I need to be aware of?Stephen Carlson wrote: ↑May 19th, 2022, 11:09 pm I distinguish between hyperbaton proper and the second-position placements of enclitics (here ἐστιν).
