The Library of Virginia is seeking a Library Specialist to analyze, arrange,
and describe moderately complex series of private and government papers;
identify and organize manuscript materials, exercising considerable
knowledge of national archival standards and considerable knowledge of
Virginia local history; and arrange and store such materials in accordance
with professional conservation guidelines. The specialist will also compile
in-house quarterly reports of new collections; complete work of moderate
impact and of considerable difficulty to ensure the preservation and
accessibility of Virginia records and materials.
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree from an accredited
institution in U.S. history, library science, or a related field and formal
training in archive administration preferred. Also, considerable knowledge
of archival theory and practice, archival automation and online cataloguing
using the MARC format, and Virginia or US history; demonstrated research
skills, ability to analyze, arrange and describe collections accurately, to
communicate effectively, and to function as a team member in a flexible work
routine.

Public Services Archivist

The Library's Archives Research Services Branch is seeking an experienced
individual with exemplary patron-service skills to provide service to state
and local government officials, specialized researchers and correspondents,
and the general public by interpreting, evaluating, and analyzing their
research needs. The Public Service Archivist will apply knowledge of
Virginia history, historiography, and the holdings of the archives in order
to guide, direct, instruct, or provide information necessary to answer
inquiries and to make available the archival records of the Commonwealth.
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in US History, American
Studies, or Library Science with an emphasis in archives administration or
ACA certification and formal experience in an archival institution;
considerable knowledge of Virginia or US history; of historical and
genealogical research methodology; and of archival theory and practice. The
position also requires demonstrated ability to provide reference services in
an archival repository, to speak in public and to write effectively, to plan
and carry out projects and prepare publications, and to direct the work of
others. Must be able to work with the public on a sustained basis and as a
team member. An equivalent combination of training and experience may
substitute for educational requirements. Rotating Saturday public-service
hours required. Must pass a security background check.
