Manager, Online Archive of California California Digital Library University of California $51,700 to 90,850 The California Digital Library (CDL) is a tenth research library for the University of California, complementing and comprising the nine campus libraries, whose mission includes building, managing and preserving high-quality digital collections, promoting changes in scholarly communication, and extending participation and access to select collections to populations external to the University. The Online Archive of California (OAC) is a searchable database that integrates finding aids to and selected digital facsimiles of primary source material held in archives, libraries, and museums throughout California. To date, the OAC has been created primarily through a series of successful grants. As such, the OAC is the foundation for a comprehensive union database of California's unique collections of primary sources. For further information, see www.cdlib.org/about/ . The OAC Manager will report to the Associate University Librarian (AUL), who also serves as the Director of Shared Content for the CDL. With the OAC as a foundation, the OAC Manager will lead the CDL in creating a collaborative digital library of primary sources (e.g., text, images, audio and their metadata) and innovative forms of publication and dissemination for various audiences. Responsibilities: Plan, design, and implement collections of digital primary sources for the CDL. Develop the necessary policies and procedures to guide the development of a collaborative digital library, including those for archiving and preserving of digital content and for integrating OAC content with other digital collections and services. Collaborate with CDL Technologies to develop and implement solutions to support digital library collections, including tools that assure standardized creation and display of digital objects and metadata. Design an overall structure for digital object production and ongoing operations in a dispersed environment. Lead UC institutional partners and UC faculty and librarians in initiating projects in strategic areas of content development. Identify and secure external funding for multi-institutional digital library projects, administer grants, and ensure that budgets (presently more than $2 million/year including grants) are spent effectively. Provide leadership to the UC campuses, external partners, and the national digital library community in building standards-based digital archives and publications. Collaborate with the AUL and other CDL senior staff on content selection and integration, licensing and rights issues, business models for sustainability, user and staff education and evaluation, public information, and defining the technology support necessary to maintain and enhance the Online Archive of California. Qualifications: Required: Superior leadership skills, including creativity and initiative in planning and implementing new, complex programs. Demonstrated success in relevant and complex project management, preferably involving multiple types of institutions. Knowledge of digital library technologies, issues, and trends. Knowledge of bibliographic, archival, and digital description and access standards (e.g., EAD, TEI, SGML, XML, HTML, Dublin Core) and practices. Understanding of scholarly and public use of library collections. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies. Grant writing expertise. Experience in developing and overseeing Requests for Quotations/Proposals for complex software packages and for information technology services. Preferred: A Master's Degree in an appropriate field. Knowledge of relevant delivery technologies, including object and relational databases and multi-tiered systems. Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with researchers and scholars. Participation in, or knowledge of, key digital library organizations and associations at the regional, national, and international level.
