I, too, was just stunned to read of Jon's sudden death in The Washington
Post this morning. (Why today, when he died on January 2, only The Post
obitwriters could explain, but won't).

I would imagine that if you checked the Post for either Jan 3 or 4 that you
would find a paid obit/announcement (placed by the family/funeral home for
Mr. Reynolds.) In today's Post there are 93 such announcements. The Post
probably maintains an obit file for key persons (statesmen, politicians,
military, etc.) updating the file as needed. For those without a file they
probably scan the funeral notices and select some for further write-up or
prominence based upon age, occupation, or some other arbitrary factor.

That is my take upon it.
