This certainly came as a shock. I first met Jon in 1985, when my former
boss and I spent part of a day at Georgetown, with Jon guiding us through
the mysteries of dBase programming and searching. Both of us were
computer neophytes and were quite intimidated, marveling that anyone could
understand the complex language then required for programs like dBase.
We were considering our first computer purchase -- a blazing fast IBM
PC/AT -- and were wondering how we'd use all of that computing power.
Like most of us, we did learn to use the electronic toys and make them
work to our benefit, albeit not without many bumps along the road, and
perhaps a few detours.

I'll remember Jon for his wit and considerable wisdom -- he was often
helpful when I posted inquiries to the list. Through numerous SAA
sessions, and many other avenues, Jon was a tireless and passionate
advocate for archives, and for archival automation. He will be greatly
missed.
