I first met Jon at the Seattle SAA meeting (1990). At the time, I was a
relative newbie to academic automation, and to the profession in general,
and was investigating the possibilities for using DBase here at W.U. Jon
was already an experienced and capable DBase programmer, and he gave me
much helpful advice. In subsequent years I would see Jon at SAA meetings
from time to time and our talk always centered around computers and what
automation strategies we were using at our respective institutions. I
certainly learned a lot from him. When the Web came along, there was
Jon, writing programs to migrate his finding aids to the web environment
and creating many fine digital exhibits.

When it came to academic automation, Jon paved the way for many of us,
including myself. He was a good friend and a fine archivist, one I will
miss greatly.
