This must be a universal problem. We have many collections that include
these kinds of bulky items, and it's always a case-by-case judgment.
Our archive has many synagogue collections, and they all come with heavy,
bulky State of Israel Bond plaques given to reward donations. I have at
times imagined an exhibit built entirely around State of Israel Bond
plaques.... but in reality, I list these and then discard them.

Personal awards are more likely to be unique, but we don't keep them all.
If I can dis-frame them, I do so and tell the donors up front that I will.
This year, we used several personal awards in an exhibit, but the best ones
were not the big wooden plaques (too boring), but some certificates from
the 1940s, hand-lettered and decorated in color. I only wish they were all
like that!

To return to the previous issue I raised, there doesn't seem to be an archival
container out there that will hold these things efficiently. I have
considered
special shelving (too expensive) and racks (like painting racks) but have not
settled on a solution. There must be a storage method better than leaning
them up against the back wall of the archive. Any ideas out there?
