PROJECT MANAGER, AGRICULTURE AND RURAL LIFE

Minnesota Historical Society seeks a Project Manager, Agriculture and Rural
Life to provide on-site project management for the joint Minnesota-North
Dakota project on the documentation of change in agriculture and rural life
in the Red River Valley. This is a full time 14 month grant position
funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission based
in Fargo-Moorhead area with continuation dependent upon available funding
and program need.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Using two geographic areas in the Red River Valley as
test beds, the project will expand the traditional notion of "records" and
records surveys, involve records creators in the discussion of identifying
and appreciating documentary sources, acknowledge and accommodate the wide
range of repositories responsible for acquiring and preserving modern
documentation. The specific goals of the project are:

a) defining important components of change in rural society in the late
20th Century;
b) identifying extant records (in- and outside repositories) that provide
documentation of those changes;
c) considering non-traditional sources to document those changes;
d) outlining practical means of creating documentation where necessary;
e) prioritizing sources and efforts against limited repository and
community resources (prioritization will include difficult discussions
about who should be responsible for documenting at what level--counties,
regional research centers, state?).

The results of the project will be disseminated through an extended project
report.

SUMMARY OF WORK: Major responsibilities include: 1) provides on-site
project management of the grant and handles day to day operation of the
project from a project office in Fargo-Moorhead; 2) collaborates in
planning for, and facilitates focus group and related meetings of scholars,
archivists, and citizens aimed at defining a subset of issues/topics upon
which to focus the project surveys; 3) collaborates in creating detailed
plans for project surveys in Minnesota and North Dakota including creating
detailed plans for two surveys, one for each geographic area covered by the
grant; 4) conducts and prepares preliminary analysis project surveys in
Minnesota and North Dakota, including on-site and internet surveys as
required; 5) prepares and disseminates information and digests of
information gained from project surveys. The position will participate in
follow up meetings with scholars, archivists, and citizens to discuss the
implications of the surveys, identification of documentary priorities, and
implementation strategies based on existing resources; 6) prepares
materials needed for project final reports and assists in preparation of
final reports as directed; and 7) perform related work as apparent or
