Re: book accessioning policies for archives repositories

Randy,
Our Special Collections contains published books, rare and otherwise, that
conform to our collection developement policy. The Genealogy Room has
published family histories and New England histories, and published vital
records. The Archives Room, where I work, has published works on Whaling,
Quaker history, 1st editions, and New England histories. Many of these have
pre-1850 pub. dates.
For the last year I have been working on cataloguing these, using OCLC. I
have been creating original records for items not in OCLC.
At the end of this project all our whaling and Quaker published books, early
rare and recent replaceable, will be catalogued and accessible through our
OPAC and of course on OCLC.

Rather than the BIB records, accession information is added to the
corresponding holding record on our OPAC. We have set up a field SOURCE:
where I enter accession information.
If you are using MARC and would like to see the accesssion information on
the BIB, you could use the 541 field.Though I should state that this field
is more often used for original or historical items.
Which I guess might qualify in your case.

Just my 2 cents.
