Director, Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection and Head, Media

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Media Archives is one of the largest broadcasting archives in
the country.  The Archives includes over 90,000 television and radio
programs, 5 million feet of newsfilm, folk music field tapes and home
movies. The Peabody Awards Collection is the keystone of the
collection, containing virtually every entry submitted for this
prestigious award, and constitutes one of the foremost and most
diverse sound and moving images collections in the world.  The
Director will be involved in planning for a new special collections
building that will house the Archives as well as a separate building
that will contain a new media center.

The Director will be expected to build upon significant base budget
by obtaining grants and developing other sources of outside funding
for ongoing or new digital projects.

The Director is responsible for the development and management of
services and collections of the Media Department and serves as
liaison to a wide variety of departments both within the Libraries
and the University.  The Director is responsible for access to all
types of media materials located in the department and archives
including archival materials and an extensive commercial media
collection

The Director supervises two professional and three staff positions
and reports to the University Librarian. For a full description of

QUALIFICATIONS:

ALA-accredited MLS, or subject master?s degree with equivalent
combination of education and experience (e.g., ACA archival
certification); Significant experience in  media collections
including managing an archival area; Broad academic background, with
strong interest in broadcasting, film history/criticism,
instructional technology, or other related field preferred, with
preference given to candidates holding or pursuing an advanced
degree; Successful experience with writing grant proposals and
managing grant projects; Demonstrated knowledge of media materials,
preservation and equipment; Knowledge of copyright and processing of
media materials; Demonstrated supervisory skills; Interest in
digital technologies and the integration of media into the University
curriculum; Effective oral and written communication skills; Ability
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
colleagues, faculty, and library users; Experience in an academic
library preferred.


BENEFITS:  Standard benefits package includes life, health and
disability insurance and mandatory participation in the state or
optional retirement system, and 21 days annual leave, plus 12 paid
holidays.  Salary minimum: $50,000, commensurate with experience.
