POSITION:   Archivist

APPOINTMENT RANK: Assistant or Associate Professor

SALARY:   Assistant Professor: $30,000 minimum
    Associate Professor: $37,000 minimum

AVAILABLE:   June 1, 2000

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Archivist administers a dynamic, user-oriented University Archives
program.  Primary responsibilities: to collect and appraise records from
UT administrative offices in cooperation with a campus-wide records
program; to arrange, describe, and preserve these records; and to
promote the use of records by providing efficient user service and
aggressively publicizing holdings through exhibits, special events,
classroom presentations, and other outreach activities.  The Archivist
develops written policies and procedures and supervises student
assistants, and assists in the general administration of the team.
Reports to the Head of Special Collections.

Specific
Duties: 1. Appraise and collect University records.  Visit University
offices to inventory and review files.  Identify areas in which existing
documentation is weak, solicit records in targeted areas.  Re-evaluate
existing appraisal guidelines and undertake evaluation of electronic
records.

 2. Apply appropriate technical standards to the arrangement and
description of University records.

 3. Review and develop as needed policy statements and procedural
guidelines regarding the appraisal, arrangement, description, and the
use of University records.

 4. Share general reference duties with other Special Collections staff,
provide specialized reference service for University Archives and
publicize University records through tours, classroom presentations,
exhibits, special events, news releases, and other outreach activities.
Provide instruction to first-time users.

 5. Select, train, and supervise part-time undergraduate and graduate
student assistants who process and service University Archives
materials.

 6. Assist in the general administration of the team and the development
of general policies and procedures.

 7. Participate actively in University, scholarly, and professional
activities and remain current on developments in archival theory and
practice.  Other duties as assigned, including service on library
committees.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA-accredited program.  Recent
professional archival experience and evidence of organizational ability,
initiative, and
flexibility.  Strong communication and interpersonal skills, service
orientation, and the
ability to work effectively with colleagues, faculty, and students in a
dynamic,
team-based environment.  Experience with the standard desktop software
applications
 and networked electronic resources, and familiarity with the
application of computer
technology to archival description and collection management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Several years experience in a professional
archival
position in an academic setting. Supervisory experience; training and/or
experience in
records management and the appraisal of electronic records.  A second
masters in history
or other relevant field.

BENEFITS: Librarians at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have
faculty rank and status and are appointed for twelve months. This is a
tenure track appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
Library faculty must meet University requirements for promotion and
tenure. Annual leave is accrued at the rate of two days per month and
sick leave at the rate of one day per month. Faculty have their choice
of a state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF. Non-refundable contributions to
either retirement plan are paid for the employee by the University.
Group health and life insurance plans are available. Tuition remission
is available for all university employees; partial undergraduate tuition
remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT
employees.

ENVIRONMENT: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a Carnegie Research
Level One institution, enrolls approximately 26,000 students from every
state in the United States and approximately 100 other countries. As
Tennessee's comprehensive campus, UTK offers more doctoral programs than
any other institution in the state, and its faculty attract nearly $80
million annually for sponsored research programs. UTK is one of 27
higher education institutions holding the distinction of being both a
land-grant institution and state university.

The UTK Libraries, with an annual budget of almost $10 million, holds 2
million volumes and receives approximately 14,000 current serials. The
Libraries system includes the John C. Hodges Library and four branches
on the Knoxville campus: Agriculture-Veterinary Medicine, Map, Music,
and University Archives and Special Collections. A fifth branch, the
Social Work Library, is located in Nashville. Over three hundred persons
are employed, including 49 librarians, 8 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150
students. UTK Libraries is a member of the Association of Research
Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center for Research Libraries. The UTK
Libraries installed a client-server integrated system in 1997. The
Libraries also offers a Web-based information system and access to a
variety of electronic information sources.
