Re: inquiry

Having had the responsibility and opportunity during my terms as Vice President and again as immediate past president of the Academy of Certified Archivists to review all of the applications submitted by individuals who applied to take the ACA exam, I feel compelled to respond to the statements that ACA allows employing institutions to determine what is professional employment and that it contributed to the non-professionalization of the profession.
Every person who seeks to take the exam based upon qualifying experience has to include a current (as well as all previous) job descriptions with the application. Those of us who review the applications examine very closely those job descriptions to be sure that the work is actually professional level. If it is not, we do not count the experience. If there is some question, we seek additional information before granting approval to take the test.
I should also note that applicants who apply with a master's degree that includes a specified number of credit hours in archival courses, we require a course description before accepting those hours.
