Designing a new archives

Dear list,

The Magnes Museum is starting the process of designing (extensive remodel) of our new building (more space, new location, changing directions).  The architects are initiating a design process that includes extensive staff comment and feedback.  We would love to hear the best and worst stories from list members or friends.  Our particular concern is the Western Jewish History Center (which is a collecting archives) and the Blumenthal Library (special collections/research library) with whom we will probably share at least a reading room.  Any examples of small archives, especially those that serve as departments in museums or other cultural institutions, and/or who cooperate closely with an independent or semi-independent special collections/library program would be great as well.  We are also interested in hearing best/worst experiences with installing compact shelving.
