Re: Video Numbering

Amy-

The LaGuardia and Wagner Archives uses a series of numbers that over time have lost some of their meaning but initially had a purpose.

A video number looks like this 01.001.v0051.

The first two numbers are for the record group in this case the Fiorello LaGuardia Collection. The middle three numbers were orginally set up to be a series number, however, over the years the original key to explain what these numbers mean has been lost. The v of course means its a video and is the only numbering system in the Archives that ultilizes letters in the numbering system. The last 3 numbers are sequential.

The only problem that I have incountered with this type of system, (we use similiar numbering for our whole collection) is that the computer database uses the whole number when sorting and so the records do not end up in order if the center three numbers change for each item based on the series, other than that the system seems to work fine in terms of keeping track of things

Best of luck
