Re: Audio Equipment reccomendations

This scares me for entirely different reasons. Playing back materials
without proper equipment and training can and WILL destroy them. Old
equipment that has not been properly maintained - but may be VERY cheap -
can destroy media very nicely. AND it takes more then equipment to take care
of A/V materials - it takes people with the technical expertise as well.
Dare I ask what efforts are being made to preserve the materials? Will the
preservation masters be made before or after they have been abused by hand
me down equipment? I know - of course - there is no money for preservation.

Perhaps it scares me because we spend so much time here trying to do high
quality work - I thought we had come to a time and place when the archival
community had come to respect A/V materials and their content in the same
fashion that we respected other materials - and that means handling them
properly and storing them properly - and this most certainly is not the way
to do that. The reality I guess is that a large part of the community HAS
made these realizations and understands the issues - but I can't help but
shake my head - after so many years of work by so many people trying to save
our A/V heritage a posting like this is quite a disappointment. I also am
scared about an institution taking materials in from a donor, then not
having the equipment or expertise to properly keep the collection. It seems
to me it would be far better to have an institution that is equipped and
financially able to support the collection be the repository.

Ah well. The battle is not over - YET. So my answer to the question -
Please give these materials to someone who can care for them properly - or
learn yourself how to - raise the money to properly fund the migration of
the collection - money to fund both preservation AND access - but please do
not destroy the materials as part of the learning process. I thank you on
behalf of your new A/V collection.

This Scares Me, really scares me, this along with secretaries who can't
operate a typewriter. Before long we will have to be giving living history
presentations on typing and vinals.

We recently rec'd some 33 1/3 RPM record albums and reel-to-reel tapes. We
don't have the appropriate audio equipment to play these items and were
wondering if anyone in the region would have old equipment that they would
want to part with, or any suggestions as to the best (i.e., cheapest --
shocking!!!) way to obtain said items.

Thanks
