Position Announcement



     The La Jolla Historical Society, located in La Jolla, California, 
     seeks a part-time Archivist (20hr/week).
     $12.00 per hour
     Filing Deadline: 3/31/2000
     
     Duties Summary - Under the direction of the Executive Director surveys 
     holdings and prioritizes projects, develops policies and written 
     procedures, appraises and accessions new collections, processes 
     archival collections (i.e., arranges, describes and preserves 
     resources) for public use, prepares finding aids, develops and 
     maintains database management systems, prepares grant applications, 
     supervises volunteers, orders archival supplies, assists researchers, 
     and coordinates public service activities.
     
     Required - Bachelor's degree in history, political science, public 
     administration or closely related field AND 2 to 3 years work 
     experience in an archive or special collections repository. Experience 
     using database management, word processing and scanning software.
     
     Preferred - Experience in arranging and describing archival materials 
     according to accepted national standards.  Experience in handling 
     fragile archival materials and in selecting proper preservation 
     housings and treatment. Knowledge of photographic techniques and 
     processes, and of issues relating to the conservation and preservation 
     of photographic materials.  Experience in public services.  Knowledge 
     of California, San Diego and La Jolla history.
     
     Description of the Society - The La Jolla Historical Society, a 
     nonprofit organization founded in 1963, is dedicated to the discovery, 
     collection and preservation of La Jolla's historical artifacts, 
     memorabilia, and sites and structures.  The Society is committed to 
     increasing the community's awareness of its heritage by providing 
     access to its collection and disseminating information.
     
     Special Conditions of Employment - Will be required to work 
     occasionally with dirty and dusty materials.
