Position announcement: Manuscript Librarian

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has an opening for a
manuscript librarian to join the Special Collections Unit.  The unit,
formally established in 1973 and staffed by five librarians and archivists,
is responsible for rare books, manuscripts, university archives, and local
government documents.  The Manuscript Collections consist of approximately
270 collections that focus on the social, political, and architectural
history of the greater Charlotte region.  Among collections of particular
importance are the papers of journalist Harry Golden, poet Carl Sandburg,
and national NAACP chairman Kelly Alexander, Sr.  For further details about

Responsibilities: The manuscript librarian's primary duties involve
appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of the Manuscript
Collections.  A major project will be to review the entire system of finding
aids for the Manuscript Collections and the University Archives in the
context of the electronic environment.  He/she will also assist the special
collections librarian in identifying potential manuscript collections and
working with donors; collaborate with Technical Services staff to catalog
manuscripts through the library's new III system; work with the reference
archivist to create and maintain web pages relating to the Manuscript
Collections; take the major responsibility within the unit for facilities
and space management; supervise student assistants; and share with other
unit staff responsibility for reference service in Special Collections.
Reports to the Special Collections Librarian.

Qualifications: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program and two years
professional-level experience in processing manuscript collections.
Demonstrated aptitude for planning and implementing a comprehensive finding
aids system.  Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in a
changing environment.  Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and
communication skills.  Preferred: Experience cataloging manuscripts,
creating web pages, using SGML/EAD, and supervising student workers;
coursework in archival administration; and knowledge of North Carolina
history.

Status: Full-time, 12-month tenure-track appointment with faculty rank.

Salary: Competitive and dependent upon qualifications.
