IRMT press release no. 3 - MPSR study programme

IRMT Press Release No. 3

6 March 2000

Management of Public Sector Records Study Programme

The Trust is pleased to announce that the Management of Public Sector Records (MPSR) Study Programme materials are now available. The materials have already been distributed free of charge under licence to nearly 60 national archives and universities, principally in developing Commonwealth countries, but also to a small number of other countries.

This distribution was generously funded by the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA) International and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The material consists of eighteen self-study modules on records and archives issues, organised to address core, advanced and specialist topics. In addition to the modules, there are seven associated training manuals, a series of 34 case studies, a glossary of terms, a guide to additional sources of information on records and archives issues and an educator’s resource kit.

The materials are published by IRMT, however since 1997 the International Council on Archives (ICA) has been a partner in the project. The core and advanced modules have already been translated from English into Spanish by the Mexican National Archives, with funding from the Organization of American States. A consortium of French-speaking archives and records professionals and educators are planning to adapt the material into the French context.

At its simplest, the MPSR Study Programme serves as a self-study programme for anyone interested in learning about records and archives management. The modules are organised to allow review and self-assessment by students.

The training modules can also be used within a formalised and accredited distance education programme, and adapted for face-to-face instruction or workshops.

Following the free distribution, English language versions of the material will also be available for sale (under licence) from March 2000. Any surpluses from sales will be used to fund the ongoing development of the Study Programme in the form of revisions and new material. A CD-ROM is planned for later in 2000, and ultimately on-line ordering will be possible via the Trust’s website. Until then enquiries can be made to Elizabeth Box at ebox@irmt.btinternet.com.
