SUMMER POSITION - DIGITAL MANUSCRIPTS PROGRAM, NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE

APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 7, 2000

The Digital Manuscripts Program of the National Library of Medicine in
Bethesda is seeking a graduate student to work this summer as a Technical
Information Specialist, at the GS-7 pay scale ($13.83 per hour). The Digital
Manuscripts Program makes the archival collections of prominent biomedical
scientists available on the Web. This process includes, in part, processing
the collections of personal papers (from accessioning through finding aid
creation), selecting documents for digitization, assigning metadata to the
digitized documents, scanning documents, seeking permissions for the use of
documents on the Web site, and researching and writing historical
information for the Web site. The employee would join a team of archivists
and historians to work on a variety of projects that may include assisting
with the collection processing, seeking permissions from document creators,
setting up a new name authority control system, or assisting with design
modifications to the Web site. There are a number of opportunities that
could be pursued, depending on the employee's interest.

To view the Web site being created by the Digital Manuscript Program, go to
www.profiles.nlm.nih.gov. Information about the National Library of
Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, can be found at
www.nlm.nih.gov.

Employment will be from May through September (or shorter) and would be
secured through the National Institutes of Health Summer Employment Program
for Non-Scientific Positions. The online application and information about
the program can be on the Web at summerjobs.nih.gov. Interested applicants
should call Sue Anderson at 301-402-3478 before submitting the online
application.

Please feel free to call or e-mail with any questions as well. Again, the
application deadline is April 7, 2000.
