Special Collections Catalogue Librarian, University of South Carolina

Thomas Cooper Library, University of South Carolina, seeks an experienced
professional to lead the cataloging and reader services team for a fast-growing
rare book and special collections department. The position reports to the
Associate University Librarian for Special Collections.  The primary duties
include (1) cataloguing, including original cataloguing, across a range of
historical periods and formats; (2) supervision of 2.5 staff members; (3)
specialized reference service to researchers; (4) liaison with other library
areas, especially in technical services. Dependent on interests and experience,
duties may also include participation in acquisitions, digitization and
web-development, programs, exhibits and donor relations. Duties may include
occasional evening or weekend events.

The University of South Carolina enrolls 17,000 undergraduate students and
8,000 graduate students on the Columbia campus. The Thomas Cooper Library, a
member of the Association of Research Libraries, has 2.7 million volumes, 3.4
million microforms, and over 1700 current serials, catalogued through
OCLC/NOTIS. Thomas Cooper's Department of Rare Books & Special Collections has
at its core the original holdings of the antebellum South Carolina College
library (including the College's Audubon and extensive holdings in natural
history and travel), but has expanded rapidly in recent years with outstanding
collections in history of science (notably Darwin), Scottish literature
(notably Robert Burns), Italian history (notably Giuseppe Garibaldi) and modern
American literature (notably F. Scott Fitzgerald, Joseph Heller, and James
Dickey). 

QUALIFICATIONS. REQUIRED: Master's degree from an ALA- accredited library
school; minimum of two years professional cataloguing experience, including
experience with older and foreign-language materials; thorough knowledge of
AACR2, MARC, LCSH, LC classification, and standard authority control
procedures; solid general educational background; effective oral, written and
interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated supervisory, organizational,
time-management and problem-solving ability. 

DESIRABLE: Specialist training or significant experience in rare book
cataloguing, historical bibliography, and/or archival work; reading knowledge
in two or more foreign languages; second graduate degree in a relevant
discipline and/or historically-based research; previous supervisory experience;
interest in digitization development; previous experience with management
issues for special collections departments. 

SALARY: the salary is $30,000 minimum for 12 months. Salary is dependent on
qualifications and experience. Faculty status, tenure-track. Benefits include
medical, dental, state retirement or optional TIAA/CREF retirement plans.
