Re: Software

I agree with points brought up by the others who recommended using
MS-Access - yes, it is a very useful/powerful program, and yes, it is
compatible with other MS-Office software - I even use it myself to catalog
our holdings.

HOWEVER - I used to use the DOS-based precursor to Filemaker, and I liked
it a whole bunch more than MS-Access. It was much more flexible and
intuitive, and I didn't have to spend 2 whole days in classes to learn it.
Setting up the fields and the forms design was much easier and quicker, and
merging data sets was very simple and straightforward. Colleagues here use
Filemaker Proto post very large data sets on the Web without a hitch, and
they can't say enough good things about it. I still would be using it if a
decision had not been made higher up the line that we would "archive in
Access".

Your friend should consider what he wants the data base to do, and how much
data manipulation he will need. If his office isn't hooked onto the
Microsoft teat, then he may not need to stick to MS-Access, and that might
save him some $$ as well.

products deserve their day in the sun!)
