Re: How Many Photocopies is too Many?

I think that how many photocopies you produce is a function of the terms of
reference of the archives in which you work. For myself, I work in a
National Archives handling requests for access under our freedom of
information legislation. In that context, the production of photocopies is
dependant upon how much teh requester is prepared to pay. Today for example
I am dealing with a requester you has indicated that he is prepared to order
and pay for 100,000 copies, and while we are concerned, we will do what we
can to accomodate the request. In the ordinary scheme of things, requests
for several thousand pages is really quite normal at this institution, while
for many others a request for a few hundred can be seen as an almost
insurmountable problem.

I think this question has been recently discussed, but I need some
help. Last fall, an out-of-state patron requested 1000 photocopies from
a collection. A grad student was hired, and the photocopying was done.
Now, the patron would like the remaining folders copied (ca. 2000 more
copies). In all, the 6 folders or 3000 items constitute the entire
correspondence of one area, but a small percentage of the collection.

What is standard practice in other Special Collections and/or archives.
Do you make this many photocopies for a patron? We haven't had this
question before and would like some suggestions.

Thanks in advance.
