Yet another version of the hushpuppy story
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, in her book Cross Creek ,relates the
following version of the invention of hushpuppies. Coastal
southerners frequently fried their fish. This would attract the
attention of the dogs, hunting or otherwise, and the cooks would fry
lumps of the fish batter and toss that to the dogs with the admonition to
"hush puppy." She got this history from the local
hunters.
