Re: Thesauri

I have taken a course in Thesuari and Index Language Building this past
fall at University of Maryland. One the major points of the course is that
to create an accurate thesaurus for your purposes, whatever they may be, it
is necessary to build your own. However these thesauri built during this
class did not exist in a vacuum. They were based on research in all
possible term sources including pre-existing thesauri. In my daily work I
contribute to a subject thesauri in a historical resource center. My area
of concentration is printing presses and related activities. We are
building it to our needs and our terms but I use TGM and AAT often as
reference points, good or bad. So in answer to your question yes you do end
up building your own because it is difficult to find a thesaurus that will
accurately model your area exactly as it exits. However a pre-existing
thesauri are very good places to start.

For a university archives project, is it better to create our own
thesaurus or use a pre-defined thesaurus? The university is biomedical in
nature and includes archives from the university teaching hospital.

Thanks.
