Re: Jewish Cultural Reconstruction papers

Thanks - I think that will help my researcher some. We have some of Salo
Baron's correspondence (with the WJC), but only general information on the
JCR.

Anyhow, thanks again ever so much,
Anna

        Subject: Jewish Cultural Reconstruction papers

Jewish Cultural Reconstruction, Inc. was dissolved in 1976. JCR was
established in 1947 by the Commission on European Jewish Cultural
Reconstruction. The Commission was created in 1944 by the Conference
on
Jewish Relations, later known as the Conference on Jewish Social
Studies.
The Conference published the journal Jewish Social Studies
(1939-1988/1993).
Historian Salo W. Baron (1895-1989) was a key player in all of these
        organizations.

According to information I had gathered in 1978 (when Baron was
alive) for a
survey of archival resources about German-Jewish refugees, the
records of
JCR and of the Conference "were stored in a warehouse and
inaccessible.
Their ultimate disposition has not been determined by the
Conference."
Baron's papers are in the Dept. of Special Collections at Stanford
University (Call number M580). Baron's library was purchased by
Stanford as
the nucleus of their Judaica holdings.

Perhaps the folks at Stanford Special Collections can shed some
light on the
archives of JCR and the Conference on Jewish Social Studies. Baron's
papers
comprise a very large amount of material. The RLIN description of
Baron's
        papers is below my signature.

Subject: Jewish Cultural Reconstruction Commission Papers

Does anyone know of the whereabouts of the archives for the Jewish
Cultural
Reconstruction Commission founded post-WWII to aid in the recovery
and
dissemination of Nazi-confiscated Jewish cultural items. We have
the
holdings of the New York office of the World Jewish Congress and
there are
some things in there - I've tried doing a search on the www and come
up with
nothing, though I know they have to exist someplace (doesn't
everything??).
We have a researcher here until Thursday, and she is, as they all
are,
desperate to find the lists of confiscated materials compiled
shortly after
        the war.

        Thanks in advance,
