jobs
Peter's suggestions brought this response from me.
Before I had completed my training, I saw two openings that I would have
loved to have applied for posted on this list. I did not, however, have
my archival courses under my belt yet.
I recently interviewed for what I consider to be a fabulous position
(and high pay is not my goal) -- I learned about it from a colleague-one
of my fellow students in casual conversation! The job description says
"ME" all over it. I stand a good chance at getting it.
My current work came about through my own aggressive action -- while
it's only a part-time job, I am THE archivist and THE expert and the
Archives are there because I suggested it in the first place. I once
joked that some people read my nametag and think it says "anarchist" or
"activist." Well my employer agreed to one point -- I AM an ACTIVIST or
there would be no archives there. And I get to do the elevator speech
often when people check my nametag.
Belong to professional organizations, and don't just read the
publications, attend the meetings! If I don't get the new job, I'll be
at the Society of Southwestern Archivists meeting in May to network some
more!
Don't burn your bridges behind you! Even if I get the new job, I won't
be leaving my old employer in the "lurch," but will make arrangements to
phase myself out (after all it is a part-time job -- I could just drop
down to 8 hours instead of 10 per week).
I didn't sell my current employer on the bottom line. I sold them on
the preservation of the institution's history. If you get a company old
enough to have a history but has ignored it, you can sell them on
salvaging it before it's too late! The turning of the century has made
a few of them realize this.
