          ******************Preservation Planning for Archives*****************

The basic elements of archival arrangement and description- surveying,
selecting, and holdings maintenance- are essential components of
archives preservation management. These activities exemplify a
practical approach to preserving materials housed in repositories,
regardless of size or scope. The emphasis is on stabilizing archival
records in order to extend their life by: determining the preservation
needs of the institution, developing a systematic methodology for
preservation priorities, and improving housing and storage materials
          and practices.

This workshop is cosponsored by the Society of Georgia Archivists
and will be held on Wednesday, May 17 at the Georgia Music Hall of

          ***********Introduction to Digital Imaging Technologies*************
          *****************for Libraries & Archives***************

The increase in digital imaging projects for library and archival
collections raises many issues related to selection, resource
allocation and long-term access (preservation). These issues must be
thoroughly examined before an institution undertakes a digital imaging
          project.

Issues addressed in this one-day workshop include the following: What
collections or resources are appropriate for digital conversion? How
will the digital files be maintained? Who is responsible for
ensuring future access to this digital information? Is future access
necessary? Institutions considering imaging project must consider
these questions. This workshop is designed to provide participants
with the tools needed to make informed decision about undertaking
          scanning projects.

This workshop will be held on Friday, June 2nd, 2000 at Louisiana
State University, Baton Rouge, LA from 9am-4pm.
