by Jean Godden

Seattle city archivist Scott Klein has a mystery on his hands. On Monday,
the city archives received a package containing a small brass seal and an
unsigned note. The note read: "Regretfully taken from the city archive and
now returned. Maybe the first official seal."

The Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA) 4/12/00
A matter of public record
http://www.theadvocate.com/business/technobabble.asp?StoryID=2057

by Jared Kendall
Traditionally, most court records and other government-generated documents
are considered to be public in the sense that anyone who wants a copy can
walk in off the street and get access to it. Once such records become
available online, however, that public record becomes much *more* public.
The reason is simple: convenience. If you had to drive all across the
country to search for court records mentioning a co-worker, it would be
costly, tedious, and time consuming. If those records were available online,
you could do the same search in moments.

The State (Columbia, SC) 4/11/00
Protect your privacy from 'bugs' lurking in your computer

by Charlie Paschal
Whether you know it or not, you're being "watched" when you access sites on
the Internet.
Cookies, in my opinion, have gotten a bad rap in the past, but the truth of
the matter is that they can be used to track users and their habits.
Ideally, most sites don't do that.

law and undermining big business.

Secretary offers lesson on keeping Social Security number private
Nobody bu Social Security Administration has right to number or to access
data on your earnings records.

tories/0412w-SSI.htm

by John Lang
Scripps Howard News Service
The government's got your number.
With the nine digits on your Social Security card, the government keeps
track of you - where you live, where you work, how much you earn - and
eventually, where to send your Social Security check.
So if somebody steals your number, what's also stolen is much of your life.

Denver Post 4/12/00
Photo in Post has US West seeing pink
http://www.denverpost.com/business/biz0412j.htm

by Andrew Backover
It's a case for the Pink Panther.
It seems that some pink-colored documents that appeared in a Denver Post
photo in Sunday's Business section have caused quite a stir in Wyoming,
where state regulators are reviewing the merger of US West and Qwest.
