Re: maritime query

Michael,

You don't say what kind of information you are looking for, with regards to
the log or the company, so it's difficult to make suggestions. It is
possible to research the log and its creator by its patent
number/description/patent holder name. The actual patent would have the
address of the patent holder (at the time of issue). Since it's an
historical patent, you would need to request it from the PTO (via a PT
Depository Library). There will be a fee attached to the request. There is a
list of PTDL's from the Patent Office homepage at www.uspto.gov

                Subject: maritime query

                Dear List,
I am looking for a repository which may hold marine
trade catalogs or
business records to help interpret a newly-arrived artifact.
It's a
mechanical ship's log (not the book, but a device which
measures speed,
distance, etc.) The little brass plaque reads, "Nicholson
Ship Log
                Co./Cleveland, Ohio/U.S. Patent 1903."

A 1920 marine directory lists "Nicholson Ship Log & Realty
(!) Co., Inc.,
409 Superior St, N.W., Cleveland, Ohio."

Any leads from our mid-west friends would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.
