Inside Academia

Dear Colleague:

I don't know about you, but I am worried about what is happening
in higher education today. We seem to have lost track of the search
for truth.

I am concerned about falling standards and soaring grade inflation.
I am upset by the bigotry and intolerance that denies a free voice to
unpopular points of view. I hate the assault on academic freedom.

Most of all, I am troubled by the pall of ignorance that seems to be
overspreading campuses across the nation. It's ridiculous that a recent
survey showed that only one in five seniors at the 55 best colleges in the
country recognized "government of the people, by the people, and for the
people" as a line from the Gettysburg Address.

I'm just one college professor of English who wants to do something to
arrest the steep decline of our institutions of higher learning. I think part
of the answer is simply to let people know what is actually going on on campus.

That's why I have started publishing "Inside Academia," an online monthly
newsletter. That's why I'd like to offer you a free subscription to this eye-
opening publication. I'm hoping to bring together an online community of
people who want our youngsters to enjoy the same thrilling intellectual
adventure that American higher education used to be.

Marc Rogers, Ph.D.
