Washington, D.C. is mainly associated with huge marble monuments and
federal institutions, despite the fact that about 519,000 residents call
the city their home. Through the documentary work of a number of local
artists and photographers, Eye of the Beholder: Washington, D.C. on Canvas
and Film conveys the spirit of life in the nation's capital.

Each of the city's vibrant communities and neighborhoods has its own
unique
history and culture. The homes, churches, schools, businesses, traditions,
and personalities captured here on canvas and film reflect the American
ideals, hopes, and dreams all over the country. The work of these
visionary artists and photographers presents a Washington that co-exists
with, and sometimes, in spite of, the federal city.

Eye of the Beholder: Washington, D.C. on Canvas and Film is a
collaborative effort between Howard University's Moorland- Spingarn
Research Center and the D.C. Public Library]. Both organizations, along
with 25 local cultural institutions, are hosting a variety of activities
throughout the millennium year to celebrate the history and culture of
Washington, D.C. These programs are being developed under the citywide
theme ?Growing Up in Washington.?
