The University of Minnesota Libraries invites applications and nominations
for the position of Special Collections/Archives Technical Services
Librarian, Materials Acquisition and Control Team.  The University
Libraries particularly encourages the candidacy of people with experience
in multicultural and multiracial settings.   

CONTEXT
The University of Minnesota Libraries includes many special collections and
archival collections.  The major portion of the holdings of these
collections, even the books and serials, lacks on-line bibliographic

Specific objectives for the position include:
· To view cataloging of special collections and archival materials as a
shared function with the various Special Collections/Archives units;
· To provide leadership and cataloging expertise to access projects for the
SC/Ar collections including, but not limited to, such activities as writing
and leading grants for cataloging materials, providing cataloging for
digital projects, working with manuscripts  etc.;
· To work with other MAC and the SC/Ar staff members to ensure that the
most efficient and appropriate methods of access are used in making the
SC/Ar materials available.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
· Performs original cataloging for materials in the Special Collections and
Archives units (60%);
· Coordinate and advise SC/Ar units on the cataloging of manuscripts,
primary source material and ephemera, developing and revising policies and
procedures (10%);
· Lead and participate in special cataloging projects, including
grant-writing activities to support cataloging needs (15%);
· Work with archivists and curators to prioritize cataloging needs
collectively (5%);
· Coordinate and participate in technical services attributes of digital
projects initiatives (10%). 


QUALIFICATIONS (Required): MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution
(or foreign equivalent); experience with monographs, manuscripts, or
special collections cataloging in an online environment;  experience with
archival description and standards in an online environment; Knowledge of
AACR2, APPM, LCSH, and LC classification; familiarity with OCLC and/or
RLIN; project leadership or management experience; working knowledge of one
or more European languages; effective written and oral communication
skills, interpersonal skills; willingness to work flexibly with different
groups in a team environment.  (Preferred):  Experience in cooperatively
developing project policies, standards, and procedures; experience in
training staff and writing documentation; experience in writing grant
proposals; experience with emerging information technologies and the
willingness to develop these skills as the technology changes; familiarity
with MARC AMC format, EAD, HTML, XML, SGML, and Dublin Core.  

Type of Appointment/Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time, 12-month,
continuous appointment track, academic/professional position with
probationary appointment at the Assistant Librarian rank.  The Libraries
offers a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, but not less
than $34,000 for this position.  Excellent benefits and moving allowance.
