Re: Murals: ART ARCHIVISTS AND OTHERS WHO MAY BE INTERESTED

Hello, Ronnie,

You could call the American Institute of Conservators (202-452-9545) to see
whom they might recommend in the Hudson Valley area for cleaning murals.
You'd have to have an analysis of the medium used on the wall before you
could have them safely cleaned. (You're sure they aren't painted on canvas
that was applied to the wall?) Plexiglas shields might be an answer to
avoiding future damage but $400 or $500 times 20 might require some fancy
fund-raising or grant proposal writing. You should have the murals
professionally photographed at least in case there's no money to invest in
their conservation. Good luck.

Subject: Murals: ART ARCHIVISTS AND OTHERS WHO MAY BE INTERESTED

Hello again!

During WWII, when the girls could not go home for vacation due to gasoline
shortages, they passed the time by designing and executing twenty murals.
They are in a basement passage that is used constantly. They represent
related to the scenes school's history, including the launching of the
Liberty ship SS EMMA WILLARD.

In looking at them more closely, it is obvious that they have deteriorated
considerably. There are cracks in the wall, consequently, in the paint.
Whenever there's any construction, the saw horses go up, items are leaned
against them and they are never protected.

How can they be cleaned and/or protected from the everyday happenings to
which they are subjected? It would be a great pity to lose them.

Your thoughts on this would be really helpful.

Thank you

Ronnie C.
