Measuring quantities of electronic records

I've been wondering if there is a consensus as to the standard method of
quantifying electronic records? In particular, what about records that
arrive at your door not in a portable format like a tape or CD but by email
or download. It would seem that measuring the bytes, kilobytes, or
megabytes, etc. is a good place to start. Beyond that, has anyone found
value to keeping track of the number of files or other quantitative
information?

Any thoughts on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
