Re: SOA State History Day Winners 2000

thanks.
I judged at the Kansas state History Day last Sat. The Kansas State Historical Society assigns two judges per motel room, as a way of saving money. I've been doing this for over a dozen years without a hitch. However, this time there was a problem. When I entered the room, another person already assigned to the room was taking a shower. When the person was done, HE cou;d not come out because he had no clothes in the bathroom with him. Obviously I should not have been assigned to a room with a person of the opposite gender, so I left. I was put out with the motel while the man was embarassed. Our two different reactions were understandable. After all, I had clothes on while he did not.

The Society of Ohio Archivists (SOA) presented cash awards to two winners
at State History Day on Saturday, May 6, 2000.

The Senior Division award went to Elyse Meena for her Individual
Performance project, "The Fix that Turned Baseball," on the 1919 Black Sox
World Series scandal. Meena attends Hathaway Brown School in Shaker
Heights,Ohio. She used the archives at the National Baseball Hall of Fame
in Cooperstown, NY, the baseball collection at the Cleveland Public
Library, and the photographic resources at the Western Reserve Historical
Society to examine and cite books, news articles and letters from the early
20th century for information essential to her performance.

The Junior Division award was given to Lucille Frey for her Individual
Exhibit on "Sputnik: A Turning Point in History." Sputnik, the first
man-made satellite to orbit the earth, was launched in October, 1959.Frey
attends St. Peter School in Huron, Ohio. She incorporated information from
local and national newspapers, news magazines and scientific magazine
sources from the 1950s along with United States and (translated) Russian
government memoranda and documents from the same period, and conducted an
interview with a person who worked with Wehner Von Braun in her exhibit

Each student was presented with a $50 check. This year was the second year
for the SOA award.
